Steven Soderbergh directs an all-star cast in the psychological thriller, Side Effects. Emily Taylor (Rooney Mara) is anxiously waiting for her husband Martin Taylor (Channing Tatum) to be released after serving 4 years in prison for insider trading. Emily tells her psychologist Dr. Jonathon Banks (Jude Law) that she is apprehensive about her husband coming home, so the doctor prescribes an experimental drug to help her cope with her anxiety. When the drug has tragic side effects (hence the name of the movie) Emily is sent to jail for a brutal murder. Dr. Banks collaborates with Emily’s old psychologist, Dr. Erica Sievert (Catherine Zeta-Jones) to help with the case and the possible effects of the drug – but who is helping whom. I have to admit I was skeptical of this film and even after the first thirty minutes I was looking for the door. (No pun intended) Fortunately, the tension-filled second half had so many twists and turns I needed a guide dog to help navigate the plot. Actually, the script was intriguing and the cast was good as expected with Rooney Mara as outstanding as she was in The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo. This film does have a dark side to it but of course they are all dark to me. Rumor has it this is Steven Soderbergh’s last film and even though it isn’t a bad movie, I would want to end my film career on a higher note. This is one of those films that you’ll enjoy while you’re watching, but in a couple months you won’t even remember the title. (Okay, I barely remember the movie I reviewed last week) This film did keep me guessing and I’m giving it a B- rating.
