Phase three is introducing new superheroes in the Marvel universe and now their first magician in the action-fantasy film, Doctor Strange. When brilliant neurosurgeon Dr. Stephen Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch) is involved in a tragic car accident and his hands are so mangled he can’t sign his name – let alone perform surgery – he begins looking for other options. His colleague, Dr. Christine Palmer (Rachel McAdams) tries to help him, but he tells her he doesn’t need her pity. Instead, he travels to Nepal where he meets a magician named Mordo (Chiwetel Ejiofor) who introduces him to the Ancient One (Tilda Swinton) in the Himalayan Mountains. (I guess names were hard to come by in the mountains.) The Ancient One teaches Dr. Strange how to project his spirit out of his body, manipulate dimensions and time, and how to use his own powers of the mind. He also inherits the Cloak of Levitation (maybe I should say the cloak chooses him.) which helps him fly and it even has a mind of its own. Near the end of Dr. Strange’s training, the Ancient One is attacked by one of her old students (Kaecilius Mads Mikkelsen) who is using his magic for darkness. Dr. Strange steps in and shows how powerful he is by having a projection battle with Kaecilius causing buildings to split, bend over, and teleporting people to different locations. Dr. Strange is a great addition to the Marvel universe. The character has a combination of several super-heroes, the arrogance of Tony Stark aka Iron Man, The humor of Scott Lang aka Ant-man and the passion of Steve Rogers aka Captain America. In addition to the colorful characters the acting was fantastic. Benedict Cumberbatch completely embraces the character of Dr. Strange and even wore his outfit to a comic book store after filming. I usually hear complaints that the 3D isn’t needed or gives people headaches but my wife said this is the perfect film for it. (Perfect for everybody but me.) Dr. strange has never been one of the more popular superheroes, but maybe that will change. I’m giving this latest origin story a B rating.
