Million Dollar Arm

Based on a true story, two boys from India learn the game of baseball in the sport drama, Million Dollar Arm. JB (Jon Hamm), the owner of a sports talent agency, goes to India with retired talent scout Ray (Alan Arkin) to find young pitchers to sign Major League Baseball contracts. In their contest, promoted as the Million Dollar Arm, two 18 year-old Indian boys named Rinku (Suraj Sharma) and Dinesh (Madhur Mittel) win the contest and go to America to play baseball. Once in the United States, JD has them train with USC baseball coach Tom House (Bill Paxton) and they also spend time with JD’s tenant, Brenda (Lake Bell) but they miss their home in India and their pitching suffers. (Did I mention Brenda is a model but the boys still miss going home) This film is inspiring, humorous, and a genuine feel-good family movie. The two actors, Suraj Sharma from Life of Pi and Madhur Mittel from Slum Dog Millionaire steal the show and the rest of the cast is equally as good. Be prepared for lots of clichés and predictable scenes, but that doesn’t make it a bad film. In fact, I like underdog movies like this and I think most people in the audience swill enjoy it, also. Keep in mind that even though this film is based on true events like the boys being cricket players and the one girl in the film being a medical intern are either not true or are far fetched. I’m giving this feel good Disney film a B- rating.
