If you enjoy buddy-cop movies -which have been around since the 80’s- you may want to check out the action comedy, Ride Along. Kevin Hart plays a high school security guard who lives with his girlfriend (Tika Sumtter), but will not marry her till his dreams of joining the police department are fulfilled. When he is accepted into the police academy, her brother (Ice Cube) who is a tough Atlanta policeman asks him to ride along one evening on patrol to prove he can’t handle being a cop. Before the end of the evening, they try to break up an arms deal led by a crime underlord (Laurence Fishburne) and the real fun begins. Kevin Hart and Ice Cube make a good comedy team. Ice Cube is a great straight man and Kevin Hart has good screen presence and he brings life to every scene – but that doesn’t mean this is a hilarious movie. In fact, I don’t think I laughed out loud more than two or three times. Sadly, the script was not good at all and the cast had to be at the top of their game to keep the audience interested and smiling. (I’m guessing they were smiling because I didn’t hear much laughing out loud.) Thank goodness the film only lasted 99 minutes because one minute more would have bumped me over “This is an okay film if you leave your brain at the door”. This isn’t a bad movie, but I’m glad I didn’t have to pay for it and I’m giving it a C rating.
