Two old boxing rivals come out of retirement to fight one final time in the comedy, Grudge Match. Henry “Razor Sharp” (Sylvester Stallone) and “Billy the Kid” McDonnen (Robert De Niro) don’t like each other but when they both have trouble in their personal lives they agree to come out of retirement to fight one final time. (No, they don’t beat each other with crutches and walkers) Sally (Kim Basinger) was Henry’s girlfriend 30 years before and she also had a child with Billy, which led to the hard feelings and ultimately the grudge match. De Niro and Stallone are perfect as aging boxers. Of course, they both played in the boxing classics Raging Bull and Rocky. Basinger is sweet, charming, and endearing as the woman who came between the lead characters. (My wife said Basinger still looks fabulous at almost 60 years old – this is one time blindness isn’t a blessing for me!) One interesting note is Basinger’s daughter Ireland Baldwin plays a young Sally in a couple scenes and according to my wife she looks a little like her famous mother. This movie isn’t necessarily hilarious, but it is funny and entertaining. Although boxing is promoted as the basis of this film, it’s actually a story about the mistakes two people made in their lives and how they intend to come to terms with them. (It’s not as deep as it sounds.) This film is better then I expected and I’m giving it a B- rating.
