2 Guns
Jays Rating: B. I'm glad I could hear it.
Actors: Denzel Washington / Edward James Olmos / Mark Wahlberg
Based on the graphic novel by Steven Grant, the action comedy 2 Guns is another one of those buddy-cop crime flicks that pair up big movie stars. Bobby Trench (Denzel Washington) an NSA agent, and Michael Stigman (Mark Wahlberg) a naval intelligence officer, are both working undercover to infiltrate a Mexican drug cartel run by kingpin, Papi Greco (Edward James Olmos). As part of their cover, they steal 43 million dollars from the bank where Papi has his drug money stashed and go on the run from the Mexican mob. To make things worse, neither of them knows that the other is working undercover, nor do they trust each other. They eventually learn each other’s identity and discover they are being hunted by a corrupt high ranking naval officer named Quinte (James Marsden) and a crooked CIA agent named Earl (Bill Paxton). The key to this film is the great chemistry between Washington and Walhberg. This is Washington’s first comedy and his comedic timing is perfect. Even though the language isn’t too bad in this movie, it is violent with some brief nudity. (Yes, leave the kiddies at home.) Action junkies will love all of the shootout scenes and the story even has a couple twists. I’m sure most action fans won’t care that some of the characters are underused or just not needed. For example, Washington’s girlfriend, played by Paula Patton, is just added for… well, I’m not sure what, but it sure doesn’t advance the story. This film is fun but it’s nothing special and I’ll forget about it before I find those cookies my wife hid from me. (They are probably sitting right on the counter.) I’m giving this entertaining film a B- rating.
