Writer, director J.J. Abrams team up with Steven Spielberg who produces the compelling Sci-fi, thriller Super 8. The setting is 1979 in a small Ohio town and a group of middle school kids led by three young filmmakers played by Elle Fanning, Joel Courtney and Riley Griffith who are out in the middle of the night making a zombie movie with an 8 millimeter camera when a train crashes in front of them. Over the next couple day’s people begin disappearing, there are frequent power outages and the military is dispersed around the town looking for something mysterious. This movie has not received much publicity mainly because of J.J. Abrams trying to keep the plot under wraps. It is scary, suspenseful, and dramatic and it even has a couple humorous lines. This is a very ambitious film by Abrams with it feeling like a cross between E.T. and Jaws at times. The main reason it works is the fantastic young cast which adds to the Science Fiction and action with great emotional moments. Now this isn’t a perfect film with some continuity issues and ending up with an exciting but common alien story. (By the way did I mention this has a monster in this movie that doesn’t utter a sound to the disappointment of a blind movie critic) I’m giving this refreshing new film a B+ rating.
This movie has been given a PG-13 rating by the MPAA
Although I am blind, I can appreciate a good movie as well as sighted individuals.
I rely more on a good story line than special effects.
