Pixar Animation and Disney team up once again and this time, they make a spoof of the James Bond movies with the animated film, Cars 2. When sports car Lightning McQueen (voice of Owen Wilson) is provoked by fellow race car Francesco Bernoulli (voice of John Turturro) he signs up to compete in an international grand prix race in Japan, Italy, and England. McQueen’s girlfriend Sally (Bonnie Hunt) persuades him to take his best friend Mater (voice of Larry the Cable Guy) a country-hick rusty tow truck along with him even though he has never been out of his little town. While in Japan, Mater is mistaken for a spy by British agents Finn McMissile (voice of Michael Caine) and Holley Shiftwell (voice of Emily Mortimer) while they are investigating cars that are sabotaging the race. After McQueen has words with Mater, the tow truck heads for home with his feelings hurt, but he manages to become involved with some sort of espionage concerning renewable oil. The last four Pixar films have been nominated for or won Academy Awards for Best Animated Picture. This movie doesn’t have the emotional pull on heartstrings as those award winning films, but Cars 2 is clever and so entertaining. Larry the Cable Guy makes the film with his funny one-liners and the racing scenes and the friendship theme is great for the kids. The international flavor of the film satisfies the adults and also helps keep the story fresh. (I’m just wondering – if one car runs into the back of another and damages its headlights, would he be blind?) That may be a question to ask director John Lasseter who actually has a yellow pick up truck named, John Lasa Tire in the film. This may not be an award winner, but it’s one of my favorites and I’m giving it a B rating.
This movie has been given a G rating by the MPAA
Although I am blind, I can appreciate a good movie as well as sighted individuals.
I rely more on a good story line than special effects.
