Paul Carr: Mall Cop

Jays Rating:

If you’re looking for a movie the whole family will enjoy, check out the comedy Paul Blart, Mall Cop. Paul Blart (Kevin James) is an overweight security guard who is constantly humiliated for taking his job patrolling the West Orange Pavilion Mall on his Segway too seriously. He lives at home with his mother (Shirley Knight) and his daughter Maya (Raini Rodriguez) while dreaming of becoming a state trooper. (Sounds like several guys I know.) Oddly enough, Blart has a hard time picking up women, but he does have his eye on a cute little lady named Amy (Jayma Mays) who works at a wig kiosk at the mall. He’s on the inside track with her after he takes her for a ride on his Segway, then he blows it when he accidentally drinks a margarita at an employee get-together and acts like a fool. (That describes the rest of the people I know.) When a group of crooks try to burglarize the mall, Maya and Amy are taken hostage and Paul Blart, Mall Cop swings into action. (Maybe I should say rides into action.) There aren’t any truly funny jokes in this film which probably has a lot to do with the script being co-written by Kevin James. Although James gives 100% in a scene where he uses his Segway to chase an old man in a motorized wheelchair, there were only chuckles in the theater. Ton a positive note, the humor is broad, there are no crude jokes and somehow I was entertained for the whole hour and a half. (I think I need to get out more.) If you’re a teenager, keep your eye out for some famous skateboarders and other Xtreme Sport athletes. I’m going to side myself with the average movie-goer and give this film a C rating.

Although I am blind, I can appreciate a good movie as well as sighted individuals.
I rely more on a good story line than special effects.
