Queen Latifah begins the year with a remake of a comedy from the 1950’s entitled Last Holiday. Georgia Byrd (Queen Latifah) is a cookware clerk in a department store who has a secret crush on one of her co-workers named Sean Matthews (LL Cool J). Following a cooking demonstration, she hits her head on an open cupboard door and is knocked out cold. Tests results and a MRI show a rare brain tumor and the doctor tells her that she only has three weeks to live. Georgia quits her job, withdraws all of her money from the bank and travels to the snowy mountains of the Czech Republic to spend her last days in the majestic Pupp Hotel. (My first question was how does someone working in a department store have this much money saved up.) All of the guests and employees of the Pupp think she is wealthy and charming and want to spend time with her – except Matthew Kragen (Timothy Hutton). Kragen owns the department store where Georgia worked. Somehow out of the millions of hotels in the world he just happened to be staying at the same one. (Right and I have 20-20 vision) Remember Sean? He learns about Georgia’s illness and somehow has enough money for a transatlantic flight to declare his love and they live happily ever after. (I need to work at that department store.) This film is full of slapstick comedy and goofy one-liners. The premise is silly but it’s uplifting, charming, funny and most of all entertaining. In fact, one scene even reminded me of myself when Queen Latifah skied down a slope out of control and mowed people over. (Don’t laugh till you see me ski.) This movie is a real crowd pleaser and I’m giving it a B- rating.

Although I am blind, I can appreciate a good movie as well as sighted individuals.
I rely more on a good story line than special effects.
