After 15 years Jane Fonda is back and funnier than ever in the romantic comedy Monster-in-Law. Talk show host Viola Fields (Jane Fonda) is fired from her job and replaced by a younger prettier girl after attacking a Britney Spears like singer during an interview. Yes, the young singer is as brainless as Spears and that is what causes the rage in Viola. Viola has a breakdown and spends some time in a psychiatric ward. When she is released she finds out that her doctor son named Kevin (Michael Vartan) is marrying a lovely Latino woman named Charlotte also known as Charlie (Jennifer Lopez). Viola goes on a murderous rampage because she thinks Charlie – who’s a temp that walks dogs – is below her wonderful son whom she thinks looks like Jesus. To sabotage the marriage Viola begins playing pranks on Charlie like buying a dress one size too small for her that makes her butt look like it needs a wide load sign on the back. In fact it probably does and also a beeper when she backs up. When Charlie finally realizes what she is doing she begins fighting back. The plot in this film isn’t too deep and it finally degrades into pranks and slapstick comedy. In fact when Viola and Charlie begin a slap fight I thought I was watching The Three Stooges. None of that really matters though because it’s very funny, the actors are perfect for their characters and I think the average movie goer will love this film. This movie was a little better then average and so I’m giving it a C+ rating.
This movie has been given a PG-13 rating by the MPAA
Although I am blind, I can appreciate a good movie as well as sighted individuals.
I rely more on a good story line than special effects.
