A good family western for not only kids but also sensitive adults is the charming animated movie Spirit, Stallion of the Cimarron. Narrator Matt Damon tells the story of a stallion named Spirit, that leads a herd of Mustangs through the old west. Spirit loves to run free through the mountains and prairies with the other horses until the day he is captured by several cowboys and sold to the Cavalry. The Colonel tries to break Spirit, but a Creek Indian who was also been held captive sets Spirit free. Spirit wants to run free, but the Indian has an attractive mare and he is torn between freedom and well, I think you can guess. Everything is going great for Spirit until the Cavalry reappears shooting their guns and the young mare is hit. Spirit finds her wounded and for a moment – because he’s done so many miraculous things – he walks over to the mare’s body and I heard an adult say, “If he takes that bullet out, I’m leaving.” I had to agree. Spirit is once again captured and his adventures throughout the frontier resume. This film is full of action and is so moving that it will make you want to laugh and cry. I enjoyed the soundtrack and if you can see you will love the new digital animation. The thing I enjoyed most is that the horses didn’t talk, sing or dance. For the kids, I give this delightful movie a B rating and for the adults, sorry, but someone has to drive them to the theater.

Although I am blind, I can appreciate a good movie as well as sighted individuals.
I rely more on a good story line than special effects.
