Shallow Hal

Funny, touching and charming is the best way to describe the newest romantic-comedy Shallow Hal. Unfortunately the story line is a little shallow, also. A simple movie about a man named Hal (Jack Black) who is only attracted to physical beauty because he is unable to recognize inner beauty. While Hal and his best friend Mauricio (Jason Alexander) have very high expectations for the women they wish to date, they have absolutely nothing to offer in return. Then by accident, Hal gets stuck on an elevator with a man named Tony Robbins, a self-help guru who changes Hal’s perceptions of women through hypnosis. For example, women with great personalities appear beautiful to Hal – even if they have buckteeth and could balance a tray on they rear-end! Soon, Hal meets and is infatuated by Rosemary (Gwyneth Paltrow) whom he sees as the most beautiful woman in the world, when in fact she weighs 300 pounds. When my wife explained this to me I thought it was funny. She said don’t laugh, I might be ugly and heavy and you wouldn’t even know it. Maybe I need a self-help guru. Anyway, Hal begins dating Rosemary and thinks he’s in heaven. Everything is going great until Mauricio finds Tony Robbins and convinces him to help reverse the spell. All of a sudden, Hal sees the REAL Rosemary, and we find out how shallow Hal really is. This film is okay. Gwyneth Paltrows performance is great as usual and there are a few emotional scenes. Most of the funny sight gags and one-liners were shown in the three-minute trailers before the movie was released. I give this somewhat entertaining film a C rating.

This movie has been given a PG-13 rating by the MPAA

Although I am blind, I can appreciate a good movie as well as sighted individuals.
I rely more on a good story line than special effects.
