If you’re in the mood for a good scare, check out the thriller written by Billy Bob Thorton called The Gift. Annie Wilson (Cate Blanchett) is a small town psychic who can see into the future by reading symbolic cards. She often follows these readings by giving personal advice, which begins to get her into trouble. She tells a woman named Valerie Barksdale (Hilary Swank) who is being physically abused by her husband Donnie (Keanu Reeves) that she needs to leave her husband before he kills her. Donnie knows that Annie has talked to his wife and he threatens to hurt her children if she doesn’t stay away from his wife. Donnie is tough with women but he’s afraid of Annie’s friend, a mentally unstable mechanic named Buddy (Giovanni Ribisi). I’m not sure if mechanics are mentally unstable but they sure charge crazy prices! When a young girl from a prominent family named Jessica (Katie Holmes) is suddenly missing, her father and the Sheriff go to Annie for he lp in locating her. Annie has a vision and sees that Jessica’s body is in the bottom of Donnie’s pond and the Sheriff orders his deputies to drag the bottom. Jessica’s body is found and everyone thinks Donnie is the killer. But there’s a twist – no pun intended – Jessica was the town mattress (her last name should have been Springhill) which leads to whispering and accusations. This is a solid, well-written film, which is superbly directed and very well cast. Of course, I knew who the killer was before the end of the movie. I guess that means I’m psychic. I give this exciting suspense film a B rating.

Although I am blind, I can appreciate a good movie as well as sighted individuals.
I rely more on a good story line than special effects.
