This weekend, if you want to see some real action, go to the theater and see Payback. Mel Gibson plays a two-bit crook named Porter, who is robbed, shot, and left for dead by his business partner, Val. Sounds like the beginning of a really bad day. Porter and Val had devised a plan to steal $140,000 from the Chinese mob. The plan worked beautifully until they sat down together to divide the cash 50/50, (for those of you who are mathematically challenged, that means each man got $70,000.) and Val became greedy. Now Val has ALL the money. Porter survives the shooting and goes after Val to retrieve his money, not necessarily for the cash, but for the principle of having been double-crossed. Val, who is now working for the syndicate, is shocked to see Porter alive. After a punch here and there from Porter, Val admits that he gave Porter s $70,000 to the mob boss, Carter. When Porter arrives at Carters office, he knocks out the guards at the door, threatens Carter, and demands his $70,000. Carter says he can t give away that kind of money without calling his boss on the phone. A new car salesman doesn t check with his boss this often! Although Porter is pointing a gun at Carter, the big boss, Bronson, refuses to return the money and Porter gives Carter a big surprise. (You ll have to see the movie.) With the help of a friend, Porter kidnaps Bronson’s son and the fun really begins. Violence, action, and thrills will keep you on the edge of your seat. I give it a B rating.
