Get Smart

The record for most 60 television shows becoming good movies has been terrible but with the cone of silence and the shoe phone making a quick entrance the silly spy thriller Get Smart may set a new precedence. Steve Carell plays Maxwell smart who is only an analyst for the secret organization “Control” because the Chief played by Alan Arkin and others think Max isn’t qualified to be promoted to Agent. With a shortage of Agents Max is promoted and teams up with the beautiful Agent 99 played by Anne Hathaway to locate nuclear devices in Russia. The pacing for this film is perfect with just the right amount of character development and over the top action. It’s witty with chuckle and smile throughout the film. As a fan of the television show I had a hard time the first half hour listening to Steve Carell instead of hearing Don Adams in his nasal tone saying “Sorry about That Chief”. On the down side even though I liked Carell and Hathaway the chemistry just wasn’t there for a semi-romantic relationship and why do the writers think those ridiculous flashback are interesting. If they worked I would flashback and watch “Get Smart” in the 60’s and since I could see then I would take another look at Barbra Feldon as Agent 99). Non-fans of the old show may enjoy this film better then fans and I’m giving it a C+ rating.

This movie has been given a PG13 rating by the MPAA

Although I am blind, I can appreciate a good movie as well as sighted individuals.
I rely more on a good story line than special effects.
