If you’re in the mood for a silly, light-hearted, romantic-comedy, you are going to love Miss Congeniality. The movie begins with a tough, tomboyish federal agent named Gracie Hart (Sandra Bullock) who ignores a direct command from her boss and compromises an arrest. She is about to be assigned to desk duty for disobeying orders when her best friend Eric (Benjamin Bratt) gives her an ultimatum. Eric is leading an investigation to San Antonio, Texas where a terrorist has threatened the Miss America Beauty Pageant. He tells Gracie that the only way out of desk duty is to work undercover as one of the beauty contestants. Gracie would rather drink beer and fight, but she reluctantly agrees to be Miss New Jersey. She is taught how to walk, talk, and dress by a beauty consultant named Victor (Michael Caine). She also has to deal with a crazy pageant director named Kathy Morningside (Candice Bergen) and a self-absorbed host named Stan (William Shatner). Beam me up Scotty, please. Gracie observes the contestants drinking in a bar, in the dressing room, (this is one scene when it really hurts to be blind) and during pageant preliminaries where each contestant said they, “wish for world peace.” (Gag!) During the investigation Gracie learns a lot about herself and gains respect for beauty pageants. This is an amusing film that rolls romance, comedy, and action into great entertainment. I give this pleasant movie a B rating- and I wish for world peace.
